Two-way player Shohei Ohtani of the Los Angeles Angels threw a light bullpen session prior to Saturday night’s home game against the Oakland Athletics.
Ohtani hasn’t pitched in a game since June 6 after being diagnosed with a sprained ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow.
Saturday’s session in the team bullpen behind the left field fence lasted 23 pitches. Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic said Ohtani threw 19 fastballs, two sliders and two curveballs.
The Angels are hoping Ohtani can avoid Tommy John surgery. He was 4-1 with a 3.10 ERA and 61 strikeouts in 49 1/3 innings over nine starts prior to the injury.
Ohtani is batting .273 with 12 homers and 32 RBIs as a designated hitter entering Saturday’s game.
