Brewers put Braun on DL with back strain

The Milwaukee Brewers placed left fielder Ryan Braun on the 10-day disabled list with a back strain ahead of Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Braves.

Catcher Manny Pina (left biceps strain) was also placed on the 10-day DL, while center fielder Lorenzo Cain was activated after two weeks away with a strained left groin.

Braun, the National League MVP in 2011, is batting just .235 with 10 homers and 35 RBIs in 71 games this season.

In June, Braun received an injection in his right thumb. He flew to Los Angeles to undergo a cryotherapy injection, a procedure in which a needle delivers freezing temperatures to treat an irritated nerve, a procedure he’s undergone in the past.

Cain was hitting .291 with eight home runs and 48 runs in 72 games when he was sidelined.

The Brewers also designated left-hander Mike Zagurski for assignment and recalled three players — infielder Nate Orf, catcher Jacob Nottingham, and right-hander Corbin Burnes — from Triple-A Colorado Springs.

The Brewers are 2-1 in their four-game series with the Braves, which ends Sunday.
