The St. Louis Cardinals acquired right-handed reliever Juan Nicasio from the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for minor league infielder Eliezer Alvarez on Wednesday.
Nicasio was picked up by the Phillies on Aug. 31 off waivers from Pittsburgh. Because he was acquired by the Cardinals after the Aug. 31 deadline, he will not be eligible to pitch in the postseason if St. Louis qualifies.
Nicasio has a 2.79 ERA with 61 strikeouts in 61 1/3 innings this season and is scheduled to become a free agent in the offseason.
Alvarez was the Cardinals’ No. 19-ranked prospect by MLBPipeline.com. The 22-year-old was hitting .247 for Double-A Springfield this season.
