Del Rio back in as Gators’ starting QB

Florida coach Jim McElwain said Luke Del Rio will start the Gators’ home game against Vanderbilt on Saturday, replacing freshman Feleipe Franks.

Del Rio relieved Franks during last Saturday’s victory over Kentucky, with the Wildcats threatening to upset the Gators (2-1) for the first time in more than three decades. Franks won a battle for the starting job against Del Rio and Notre Dame transfer Malik Zaire, but struggled in a dramatic victory over Tennessee and then again against Kentucky.

Del Rio, the son of Oakland Raiders head coach Jack Del Rio, was 5-1 as the Gators’ starter last season. He took over for Franks against the Wildcats and completed 9 of 14 passes for 74 yards and a touchdown with 43 seconds remaining to give Florida its only lead of the game.
