Roger Federer cruised into the quarterfinals of the French Open on Sunday with a straight-set victory over Leonardo Mayer of Argentina 6-2, 6-3, 6-3. This will be his first appearance in the quarterfinals at Roland Garros since 2015, which was the last time he played in the tournament, and his 12th overall. He now has made his way to 54 grand slam quarterfinals, extending his record. Susan Mullane-USA TODAY Sports Federer, who is seeking his 21st career win in a major, had little trouble advancing on Sunday. He broke Mayer’s serve in the opening game of the match and converted five of 10 break point opportunities. Mayer never had a break point on Federer’s serve. The playing conditions were Federer’s biggest challenge. “Big serving, windy, it was tough conditions… I think when it’s this kind of conditions, it’s fast, it’s swirly, especially the one side, you have a lot of wind in your back. It’s like you’re serving from sort of a tree, from a mountain, and from the other one you feel like you’re playing up the hill,” Federer said. “[It’s] important it’s focused there and I did that well, and I’m very pleased with the game.” Federer, the No. 3 seed, will meet the winner of the match between sixth-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece and fellow Swiss Stan Wawrinka, the No. 24 seed. In other action, 11-time French Open champion Rafael Nadal advanced to the quarterfinals by besting another Argentine, Juan Ignacio Londero, 6-2, 6-3, 6-3. Nadal, the No. 2 seed, now is 90-2 on the clay courts at Roland Garros and last lost in the tournament in the 2015 quarterfinals to Novak Djokovic. On Sunday, Nadal had 40 winners compared to 23 for Londero. His serve was broken just once, and Nadal broke Londero’s serve six times in 12 chances. Nadal’s next opponent will be the winner of the match between seventh-seeded Kei Nishikori of Japan and home-country favorite Benoit Paire. –Field Level Media (@FieldLevelMedia)
