Five-star cornerback Patrick Surtain Jr. surprised many recruiting experts and picked Alabama over LSU as National Signing Day got started Wednesday morning.
Surtain is ranked as the No. 6 overall player and No. 1 cornerback, according to 247Sports. He played for his father, former All-Pro cornerback Patrick Surtain, at American Heritage in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
LSU had been considered the top choice for Surtain Jr., but Alabama coach Nick Saban and his staff made a late push. He visited both schools in January.
“Why Alabama?” Surtain said live on ESPNU. “Because there’s a coach over there. They win championships. Over here, we’re used to winning, so I want to be a part of that winning culture.”
