Zach Johnson is ending his working relationship with caddie Damon Green after nearly 15 years.
Green, who signed on to become Johnson’s caddie in 2004, spilled the news to The Caddie Network.
“Zach said, ‘I think we need to take a break. It’s not a ‘firing.’ We’re too good friends for that,’ ” Green said. “I just think he didn’t want to say the word ‘fire.’ I was shocked.”
Green had been caddying for Scott Hoch when he decided to leave to work with Johnson in 2004. Johnson was coming off a first place finish on the then-Nationwide Tour and was starting his rookie season on the PGA Tour.
The pair went on to win two majors and 11 PGA Tour events together, earning nearly $50 million along the way.
But Johnson hasn’t won since claiming the British Open in a playoff in 2015 and has just 11 top 10s in the past three years after posting a career-best 10 in 2015.
Johnson, 42, will reportedly hire Brett Waldman, who most recently has been Charley Hoffman’s caddie.
