Lakers, Luke Walton agree to split

Another change at the top for the Los Angeles Lakers came Friday when head coach Luke Walton and the team agreed to a mutual parting.

The team called the expected divorce — first reported Monday — a joint decision. Walton is already being reported as the favorite to replace Dave Joerger with the Sacramento Kings. Joerger was fired Thursday in a house-cleaning day for general manager Vlade Divac.

Lakers vice president Magic Johnson resigned surprisingly as the regular season came to a close.

According to reports, general manager Rob Pelinka remains in charge, but it’s uncertain what shape the front office might take in the coming weeks entering a monumental offseason for the Lakers.

Ten months removed from the introduction of LeBron James in what was an anticipated resurrection story in Los Angeles, the Lakers are back in the draft lottery and hunting another big-ticket free agent to pair with James.

They might just be in luck with Kyrie Irving, Kawhi Leonard and Kevin Durant headlining the list of pending free agents come July 1.
