You can't stop Cris "Cyborg" Justino. You can only hope to contain her for a while.
The UFC featherweight champion successfully defended her title against unheralded Yana Kunitsaya (10-4, 1 no-contest) of Russia on Saturday night in the main event of UFC 222.
And while Kunitsaya got off to a surprising start at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas with a pair of takedowns, she only delayed the inevitable. Justino (20-1, 1 NC) of Huntington Beach, Calif., by way of Brazil, put on an awesome show of power in earning a first-round knockout at the 3:25 mark in a bout put together on three weeks' notice.
"I train all the time and I take the fight Chute Boxe (a Brazilian gym)-style on three weeks' notice," Justino said after her 18th career KO. "Anytime, anywhere, anybody."
The theme of the rest of the evening was one of big performances by emerging stars. In the featherweight co-feature bout, Brian Ortega (14-0, 1 NC) of Torrance, Calif., earned his biggest career victory with a first-round knockout of former UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar (22-6-1) of Toms River, N.J.
Ortega landed a wicked left elbow to the face, and things ended with a pair of big right uppercuts. The bout was waved off at 4:44 as Ortega became the first fighter ever to earn a stoppage won over the legendarily tough Edgar.
In a notable bantamweight matchup, undefeated Sean O'Malley (10-0) of Montana had a memorable win over Andre Soukhamthath (12-6) of Rhode Island. After winning the first two rounds, O'Malley sustained an apparent broken foot throwing a kick early in the third. However, he held on until the horn, and though he lost the round, he won the fight via unanimous decision on scores of 29-27, 29-27 and 29-28.
