Second-seeded Elise Mertens of Belgium won her second tournament title of the year, defeating Belarusian teenager Aryna Sabalenka 7-5, 6-2 in the final of the Samsung Open in Lugano, Switzerland, on Sunday.
Mertens registered nine winners, broke her opponent's serve four times and committed only seven unforced errors to win in an hour and 24 minutes.
Sabalenka, 19, piled up 24 winners but committed 35 unforced errors.
Mertens' two previous tour titles came on the hardcourts of the Hobart International in Australia.
Sabalenka was appearing in her second WTA final. She fell to Russia's Maria Sharapova for the title in Tianjin, China, last October.

Anna Karolina Schmiedlova of Slovakia captured her third WTA singles title -- and her first since 2015 -- by defeating Spain's Lara Arruabarrena, 6-2, 6-4 in the final at Bogota, Colombia.
Schmiedlova led 6-2, 5-1 and held a match point before Arruabarrena rallied to make the match competitive, but the 23-year-old Slovak still wrapped up the final in an hour and 20 minutes.
The fifth-seeded Arruabarrena, 26, was in the Bogota final for the third time. She won the crown in 2012 but fell in the last match a year ago.
