The Seattle Mariners placed right-hander Felix Hernandez on the 10-day disabled list Tuesday with lower back stiffness.
The DL stint is retroactive to July 8. Seattle also optioned outfielder John Andreoli to Triple-A Tacoma, recalling infielder Gordon Beckham and right-hander Nick Rumbelow in corresponding moves.
With the transaction, Hernandez, who last pitched Friday, won’t return until after the All-Star break at the earliest, affording the 32-year-old extra rest in what’s been a trying season. The former Cy Young winner is 8-7 with a 5.13 ERA in 19 starts, allowing 108 hits in 105 1/3 innings.
Seattle starters have combined to post a 3.99 ERA this season, leaving the struggling Hernandez as an outlier among the rest of the staff.
The Mariners enter Tuesday three games back of the Houston Astros in the American League West at 57-34, though they have a strong grip on a playoff spot with a six-game lead over the Oakland Athletics in the wild-card standings.
