Matthews says he needs surgery on ‘busted’ nose

Clay Matthews says he’s doing better after breaking his nose in a charity softball game on Saturday, but will need surgery to repair the damage.

The Green Bay Packers linebacker was pitching in the Green & Gold Charity Softball Game on Saturday when he took a line drive to the face and was rushed to the emergency room. His teammate Lucas Patrick, a guard, was the batter.

“Thank you for all the concern and well-wishes. I busted my nose pretty good and will have surgery once the swelling subsides. Thankful as it could have been much more serious,” tweeted Matthews.

His teammate Davante Adams assured the crowd after it happened, “I wanted to let everybody know Clay is all right. He’s got a little boo-boo on his nose, but he’ll be all right. He’s a tough guy.”

When play resumed, a batting practice safety net was brought out to protect pitchers the rest of the way.

The Packers are currently in the midst of OTAs, but Matthews has been sidelined with a knee injury.
