Morgan, USWNT thrive in record rout of Thailand

Alex Morgan tied the American record with five goals, four in the second half, when the U.S. women’s national team started defense of its FIFA Women’s World Cup crown with a record-setting 13-0 victory against Thailand at Stade Auguste-Delaune in Reims, France on Tuesday.

The 13 goals, the last coming by Carli Lloyd in the second minute of stoppage time, is a World Cup record, men or women, and is also the largest margin of victory.

“We really just came into this game and really wanted to showcase ourselves and what we’ve been preparing for and what we’ve been working on,” Morgan said in a postgame interview with FOX. “I think we did that. Every goal matters in this tournament and that’s what we were working on this game.”

Morgan scored her third goal in 74th minute to make it 8-0 and added her fourth for a 10-0 lead in the 81st. After a score by Mallory Pugh, she equaled Michelle Akers’ mark of five goals in a World Cup match in the 87th minute. Akers set the record vs. Chinese Taipei in 1991.

The U.S., the No. 1 ranked team in the world, did as expected against No. 34 Thailand, which is appearing in its second World Cup and had lost 12 of its past 13 matches.

Morgan, Rose Lavelle and Lindsey Horan staked the U.S. to 3-0 lead in the first 32 minutes before Samantha Mewis, in her World Cup debut like Lavelle and Horan, made it 4-0 in the 50th minute to start the onslaught of four goals in six-plus minutes.

Morgan, who has eight World Cup goals, scored with a flick off her left foot in the 53rd and Julie Ertz, another World Cup debutante, made it 6-0 in the 54th.

The U.S. had a 39-2 shot advantage to improve to 6-0-2 all-time in World Cup openers.

Other U.S. starters in their first World Cup games were defenders Abby Dahlkemper and Crystal Dunn and goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher, the backup to Hope Solo at the 2015 World Cup.

The second of three Group F matches are Sunday when the USWNT will be a heavy favorite vs. Chile at Parc des Princes in Paris. The Chileans, in their World Cup debut, lost 2-0 to Sweden, which faces Thailand in Nice, France.

Punk not dead bz pharmacy inc In many ways the show is the polar opposite of Once, now playing at the Phoenix. Though many love this sentimental story of a lovelorn Dublin busker and a Czech girl who encourages his career as a singer-songwriter, I found its lip-quivering sensitivity both wet and irksome. The Commitments, in contrast, is thrillingly brash and raucous, and concerns a band who believe that the Irish are the “niggers of Europe” and gradually learn to belt out terrific covers of Tamla Motown, Stax and Atlantic soul classics.
