Isaiah Thomas drew a $20,000 fine from the NBA on Wednesday for a clothesline takedown of Minnesota Timberwolves forward Andrew Wiggins on Monday.
With the Cleveland Cavaliers trailing in the third quarter, Thomas rapidly swung out his right arm to prevent Wiggins, slashing to the lane from the wing, from driving unchecked to the basket and struck Wiggins under the chin, knocking him off of his feet.
The league said Wednesday the fine was due to Thomas “striking Wiggins above the shoulders.”
Thomas, who debuted for the Cavaliers earlier this month, was issued a Flagrant 2 foul and ejected from the game.
“I’ve gotten numerous steals like that, going out like that,” Thomas said. “It just happened I got him in the throat. I apologized right away, because I didn’t mean to do that.”
