Carolina Hurricanes rookie Andrei Svechnikov exited Monday night’s Game 3 against the Washington Capitals after he was dropped by a punch from Alex Ovechkin in Raleigh, N.C.
Svechnikov, who appeared to be knocked out, hit the back of his head on the ice after getting punched in the skirmish. The Hurricanes subsequently announced that he was out for the rest of the night due to an upper-body injury.
According to multiple media reports, Svechnikov, 19, grew up a huge fan of Russian countryman Ovechkin, 33.
The first-period fight came shortly after Carolina scored for a 1-0 lead, marking the first time the Hurricanes were on top in the series. The fighting majors were the first penalties called in the game, coming 10:59 into the contest.
Carolina went on to win 5-0 to cut its deficit in the best-of-seven series to 2-1. Svechnikov scored the two Carolina goals in Game 1.
The Hurricanes also announced after the first period that forward Micheal Ferland would be sidelined for the remainder of the contest because of an upper-body injury.
