Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Gregory Polanco had surgery Wednesday to repair his dislocated left shoulder, the team announced.
Polanco, who turns 27 on Friday, suffered the injury on an awkward slide into second base during a Sept. 7 victory against the Miami Marlins.
The team said he would need at least six weeks of rest following his procedure Wednesday at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York.
The Pirates had already announced that Polanco would miss the rest of the season. He batted .254 with a career-high 23 home runs, 32 doubles and 81 RBIs in 130 games.
