Pruitt: No clear leader in QB competition

Returning starter Jarrett Guarantano is still fighting for the quarterback job at Tennessee, and first-year head coach Jeremy Pruitt expects a photo finish in the ongoing race for No. 1 on the Volunteers’ depth chart.

Stanford graduate transfer Keller Chryst, sophomore Will McBride and freshman JT Shrout are still competing with Guarantano, and Pruitt isn’t ready to name a starter.

“Both of them have really done some good stuff, talking about J.G. and Keller,” Pruitt, Tennessee’s first-year coach, said. “Will McBride played today with our 2s (second-team offense) a lot, and Will’s had a solid camp. JT Shrout, he may have the best arm out of all of them, but he’s got to learn what’s going on. He can spin it. He’s just got to figure it out.”

Tennessee kicks off the season Sept. 1 against West Virginia in Charlotte, N.C.

Guarantano started six of Tennessee’s final seven games last season. McBride started one game in place of an injured Guarantano.

Chryst was 11-2 in 13 starts with Stanford.
