Serena Williams will begin next week’s US Open as the No. 17 seed, the U.S. Tennis Association announced Tuesday.
Williams was unseeded at June’s French Open, her first Grand Slam tournament since returning from an extended absence while on maternity leave, and drew the No. 25 seed at Wimbledon last month.
Williams, 36, is No. 26 in the WTA rankings. She was ranked No. 1 when she began her time away from the tour.
Williams gave birth to her daughter during last year’s US Open. The draw for this year’s edition of the event will take place Thursday, with play beginning Monday.
Williams retired in the fourth round of the French Open before a spirited run to the finals at Wimbledon, where she lost to German Angelique Kerber. Williams was eliminated in the second round of last week’s Western & Southern Open at Mason, Ohio.
Venus Williams will be the No. 16 seed at the US Open.
