Any of the top five players in the FedEx Cup standings who win the Tour Championship will also automatically win the FedEx Cup and its $10 million bonus. If a player outside of the top five wins, the FedEx Cup champion will be determined by a points formula. The top five entering East Lake are Bryson DeChambeau, Justin Rose, Tony Finau, Dustin Johnson and Justin Thomas. … Thomas is seeking to become the first player to successfully defend a FedEx Cup title. … Tiger Woods (2007, ’09) is the only player to win the FedEx Cup twice ( ). He qualified for the Tour Championship for the first time since 2013 and enters the week No. 20 in the standings. The lowest-seeded player to win the FedEx Cup was Bill Haas (No. 25) in 2011. … 2015 FedEx Cup champion Jordan Spieth missed the cut for East Lake and is the only member of the U.S. Ryder Cup team not in this week’s field. … The playoffs will be trimmed to three events next year.

This is the first PGA Tour-sanctioned event in South Dakota since the Web.com Tour’s Dakota Dunes Open in 2001. … Steve Stricker, who has two Champions victories this season, will make his first start since June before heading to France to serve as a co-captain for Team USA in next week’s Ryder Cup. … Charles Schwab Cup leader Miguel Angel Jimenez is not in this week’s 78-player field. … Broadhurst leads the tour with three victories this year and has moved up to No. 6 in the Charles Schwab Cup standings. All five of his career victories on the Champions tour have been final-round comebacks.
