Wizards’ Wall tears Achilles in fall, out 12 months

John Wall

Washington Wizards point guard John Wall tore his left Achilles tendon in a fall at his home and could be sidelined up to 12 months following upcoming surgery, the team announced Tuesday.
Wall, 28, was already out for the rest of this season after undergoing surgery to remove bone spurs from his left heel on Jan. 8. He was expected to miss 6-to-8 months recovering from that injury.
According to a statement from the Wizards, Wall ruptured his Achilles “after slipping and falling at his home.” The rupture was discovered during a procedure to clean out an infection that resulted from the original surgery, according to the team.
Ironically, Wall had said that one reason he elected to have the season-ending heel surgery was to avoid suffering a worse injury.
“If I don’t want to deal with the pain or make it any worse and have an opportunity to maybe rupture my whole Achilles later down the road, you get the surgery and take it out,” Wall told the Washington Post in late December.
Dr. Robert Anderson of Green Bay, Wisc., will perform the surgery to repair the torn Achilles, but no date has been scheduled for the procedure.
A five-time NBA All-Star, Wall averaged 20.7 points, 8.7 assists and 3.6 rebounds in 32 games this season for the Wizards.
In July 2017, Wall signed a four-year, $170 million contract extension through the 2022-23 season. He is due to make $37.8 million next season, according to the Washington Post.
