Angels’ Mike Trout (calf) to miss 6-8 weeks

Los Angeles Angels star outfielder Mike Trout will miss approximately six to eight weeks due to a strained right calf, the team announced Tuesday.

Trout, who was placed on the 10-day injured list, was injured during the first inning of Los Angeles’ 7-4 win over the Cleveland Indians on Monday.

The Angels called up left-handed pitcher Jose Quijada before their Tuesday game. Quijada, 25, is 2-4 with a 5.94 ERA in 40 career games, in 2019 with the Miami Marlins and in 2020 with Los Angeles. He has 50 strikeouts in 33 1/3 innings.

Angels manager Joe Maddon said after Monday’s game that Trout was scheduled to undergo an MRI exam on Tuesday to determine the severity of the injury.

The three-time American League MVP injured the calf while running the bases on an inning-ending pop-up hit by teammate Jared Walsh.

Trout also injured his right calf in July 2019 and missed three games.

Trout is batting .333 with eight homers, eight doubles and 18 RBIs in 36 games this season. He leads the majors with a .466 on-base percentage and leads the AL with a .624 slugging percentage.

Despite the hot start, Trout was just 1-for-19 over his last seven appearances.

Overall, the 29-year-old Trout is a .305 career hitter with 310 homers and 816 RBIs in 1,288 games over 11 seasons with the Angels.
