No. 2 seed Felix Auger-Aliassime fended off a strong challenge from American qualifier Aleksandar Kovacevic and won 6-2, 6-7 (7), 7-6 (2) in the final of the Open Occitanie on Sunday in Montpellier, France.
It didn’t take long for Auger-Aliassime to be the first player to win two ATP titles in 2025. He won the Adelaide International in Australia last month and now has seven tour victories, all coming since February 2022.
The 24-year-old smashed 19 aces on Sunday with just one double fault. He was only taken to break point once, which he saved. But during the second-set tiebreaker, Kovacevic saved two championship points before climbing ahead to win the set and force a third.
It was an evenly played third set, but Auger-Aliassime grabbed a 3-0 lead in the tiebreaker and rattled off four more points in a row for the win. Kovacevic, 26, was playing in his first ATP Tour-level final.
Davis Cup World Group qualifiers
Marton Fucsovics defeated Alexis Galarneau 7-6 (8), 6-4 to clinch a 3-2 victory over Canada in their Davis Cup qualifying tie in Montreal.
Hungary had taken a 2-0 lead into the day after winning two singles matches Saturday, but Canada stayed afloat when Liam Draxl and Vasek Pospisil beat Peter Fajta and Mate valkusz 7-6 (2), 6-4 in doubles. Then, Gabriel Diallo hit 11 aces without a double fault to ease past Fabian Marozsan 6-1, 6-3, pulling Canada even before Fucsovics topped Galarneau.
Elsewhere, France blanked Brazil 4-0 in Orleans, France; Belgium defeated Chile 3-1 in Hasselt, Belgium; and Spain took down Switzerland 3-1 in Biel, Switzerland.
