Athletics get to Jacob deGrom early, cruise past Mets

The Oakland Athletics overcame Pete Alonso’s first-inning homer with an offensive barrage on Saturday afternoon, cruising to a 10-4 victory over the visiting New York Mets.

With the loss, the Mets (96-57) are now 1 1/2 games ahead of Atlanta (94-58) in the National League East after the Braves defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 6-3.

With Jacob deGrom scheduled to pitch, New York appeared on its way to a second straight blowout win over the A’s (56-96) when Alonso followed a Francisco Lindor sacrifice fly with a two-run homer, his 38th, for a 3-0 lead before Oakland starter Ken Waldichuk (1-2) had even recorded a second out.

The Mets also scored on Matt Vientos’ first career home run, a solo shot in the second, before Waldichuk and three relievers silenced the New York bats the rest of the way.

Waldichuk registered his first big-league win, allowing four runs and five hits through five innings. He struck out four without walking anyone.

Austin Pruitt followed up with two shutout innings, after which A.J. Puk and Tyler Cyr blanked the Mets for an inning apiece, giving Oakland its third win in its last five games.

The A’s did a number on deGrom (5-3), erasing New York’s three-run lead — and more — with a four-run uprising in the last of the first.

DeGrom’s two walks set the stage for a two-run double by Dermis Garcia, a game-tying RBI groundout by Conner Capel and a run-scoring single by Shea Langeliers.

Vientos’ homer got the Mets even one last time before Seth Brown took deGrom deep for a solo home run, his 24th, leading off the third.

DeGrom was pulled after four innings, trailing 5-4 and having thrown 80 pitches. He was charged with five runs on six hits, with four walks and five strikeouts.

The Oakland onslaught continued against the New York bullpen, beginning with a solo shot by Capel, his second, off Trevor Williams in the fifth.

Brown completed a two-RBI day with a run-scoring base hit in the sixth for a 7-4 lead, Nick Allen had an RBI single in the seventh and Capel wrapped up a four-RBI game with a run-scoring single in the eighth that also plated Brown when right fielder Darin Ruf misplayed the hit.

Brown and Capel finished with three hits apiece, with Brown scoring three times and Capel twice. Vimael Machin chipped in with two hits and three runs, while Jordan Diaz added two hits.

Lindor and Jeff McNeil each collected a pair of hits for the Mets, who lost for just the second time in nine games.
