Chiefs remain slight favorites as Super Bowl LIV approaches

The Kansas City Chiefs remain slight betting favorites over the San Francisco 49ers a day before Super Bowl LIV.

The Chiefs are 1.5-point favorites by DraftKings, FanDuel, PlaySugarHouse and PointsBet, while they had dipped to a 1.0-point favorite at William Hill.

According to PlaySugarHouse, this is only the third Super Bowl in history to feature a spread line of -1.0 or -1.5, and the first since the New England Patriots were one-point favorites over the Seattle Seahawks in 2015. Kansas City was commanding 73 percent of the spread wagering handle at the sportsbook.

The over bet on the 54.5 total points scored prop bet was being favored by 75 percent of the bettors at PlaySugarHouse, while Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes (+115) was garnering more than 50 percent of the MVP bet handle. Mahomes, 49ers tight end George Kittle (+2200) and 49ers defensive end Nick Bosa (+3000) had accounted for more than 52 percent of the MVP bet market at PointsBet by Friday afternoon.

The most popular combined bet at PlaySugarHouse is Kansas City at +230 to win the game along with an over bet on the 54.5 total points prop.

“The bettors have been sharp to realize that the spread was not going to change much in the past couple weeks, if at all,” said Mattias Stetz, the COO of Rush Street Interactive, which operates PlaySugarHouse.com. “They have lined up their wagers for their best return on the spread or the moneyline. The prop wagers also generate more interest every year.”

Of the more than 650 prop bets being offered by PointsBet, Kittle (+1100) and opposing tight end Travis Kelce (+725) were each attracting 13 percent of the tickets to be the first player to score a touchdown. However, the biggest first touchdown bet taken by the book was a $1,000 wager on 49ers running back Raheem Mostert (+600).

Among the more outlandish props being offered by PointsBet is +10000 odds on 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan “blowing” a 28-3 lead.” Shanahan was the offensive coordinator in Atlanta when the Falcons blew a 28-3 lead in losing Super Bowl LI to the New England Patriots.
