Deion Sanders plans to be a head coach … next year

Deion Sanders plans to add the title of head coach of a college football team to his impressive resume.

Sanders, who currently works as an NFL Network analyst, announced his intentions during an appearance on “The Dan Patrick Show” on Tuesday.

“(I’m) going to be a head coach in college football … next year,” said Sanders, who claimed that he had a second interview with an unnamed school for that very position. He added that the school in question was not Florida State, his alma mater.

Sanders’ name publicly was bandied about in November when the Seminoles were in need of a head coach following the dismissal of Willie Taggart. Sanders noted at the time that he had “not spoken to anyone from Florida State regarding (the job),” which ultimately went to Mike Norvell in December.

Sanders, a two-time unanimous All-American and one-time Jim Thorpe Award winner in four years at Florida State (1985-88), has coached at various high schools in Texas. He has not coached at the college level.

Sanders has worked as an analyst for NFL Network for more than a decade after previously appearing on CBS’ “The NFL Today.”

The 52-year-old had his No. 2 jersey retired by Florida State after collecting 14 career interceptions (three returned for touchdowns) and scoring three additional touchdowns on punt returns.

Sanders went on to be taken fifth overall choice by the Atlanta Falcons in the 1989 NFL Draft. Across 14 NFL seasons for five different teams, Sanders totaled eight Pro Bowl appearances and six first-team All-Pro nods, intercepting 53 passes (returning nine for touchdowns) in 188 games and being named Defensive Player of the Year in 1994.

He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame and Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2011.
