Potential 1st-round QB Jacob Eason heading to NFL Draft

Washington quarterback Jacob Eason will skip his final year of eligibility to enter the NFL draft.

He tweeted his decision on Thursday.

“Playing this season for the University of Washington has been one of the greatest experiences of my life,” Eason began his statement. “UW has given me an incredible opportunity to develop as a football player and a person, and I am forever grateful and honored to be a Husky.

“After contemplating my future with my family and coaches, I have decided to forego my 5th year of college and enter the 2020 NFL Draft. The opportunity to play quarterback in the NFL has been a lifelong dream, and my heart is set on the challenge ahead.”

Eason is projected to be selected in either the first or second round of the 2020 draft.

One-year return for local product

Eason, a fourth-year junior, started all 13 games for the Huskies in 2019. A Seattle-area native, he sat out the 2018 season after transferring from Georgia.

He threw for 3,132 yards and 23 touchdowns in his lone season with the Huskies. He was intercepted eight times.

“We wish Jacob nothing but the best,” said Jimmy Lake, Washington’s new head coach following the retirement of Chris Petersen. “He was a terrific teammate who worked very hard in his two years as a Husky. I’m looking forward to watching him succeed at the next level.”

Eason was the 2015 National Gatorade Player of the Year and enrolled at Georgia in 2016 as a five-star recruit. He emerged as the starter as a freshman that fall but was injured in the first game of his sophomore season. Freshman Jake Fromm took over and led the Bulldogs to the College Football Playoffs, and Eason never regained his starting job.
