OpTic Texas stormed back for a dramatic reverse sweep of the Atlanta FaZe on the final day of qualifying Sunday to clinch the No. 1 seed in the Call of Duty League Major II.
Texas defeated Atlanta 3-2 to finish qualifiers 4-1, tied with the Toronto Ultra. Because OpTic handed the Ultra their only loss of qualifiers, the head-to-head win served as the tiebreaker for the top seed in the coming week’s tournament.
In the first round of the winners bracket, OpTic will face the Los Angeles Thieves, who grabbed the eighth and final seed in the upper half of the bracket by beating the Boston Breach 3-2. Also Sunday, the Minnesota Rokkr defeated the Seattle Surge 3-1.
Major II, which will include all 12 Call of Duty League teams in a double-elimination bracket, is scheduled to be played in Boston from Thursday through Feb. 5. The Florida Mutineers, Vegas Legion, Surge and London Royal Ravens will begin in the elimination bracket after finishing qualifiers ninth through 12th.
Atlanta took a 2-0 lead on Texas by winning 250-189 on Embassy Hardpoint and 6-1 on Embassy Search and Destroy. OpTic stayed alive with a 3-2 triumph on Breenbergh Hotel Control, then evened the match by pulling out a 250-248 win on Breenbergh Hotel Hardpoint.
The final map, Al Bagra Fortress Search and Destroy, saw OpTic complete the comeback with a 6-4 victory.
Brandon “Dashy” Otell of Canada led OpTic with 115 kills and a plus-1.42 kills-to-deaths ratio.
Like OpTic, the Thieves fell behind 2-0 before charging back for a reverse sweep. Boston won 250-145 on Zarqwa Hydroelectric Hardpoint and 6-1 on Breenbergh Hotel Search and Destroy. Los Angeles answered by winning 3-2 on Al Bagra Fortress Control, 250-220 on Breenbergh Hotel Hardpoint and 6-5 on El Asilo Search and Destroy.
Dylan “Envoy” Hannon led the Thieves with 91 kills. Zack “Drazah” Jordan added 84 kills on a plus-1.02 K-D ratio.
Minnesota shot ahead by winning 250-121 on Mercado Las Almas Hardpoint and 6-5 on Embassy Search and Destroy. Seattle stayed alive with a 3-0 win on Breenbergh Hotel Control, but the Rokkr finished it off by prevailing 250-214 on Breenbergh Hotel Hardpoint.
Three Rokkr players finished with positive K-D ratios, led by Marcus “Afro” Reid of the United Kingdom (65 kills, plus-1.63).
