Tiz the Law, who drew the No. 8 post position for the Belmont Stakes, was set as a 6-5 favorite to win the race on Saturday in Elmont, N.Y. Traditionally the final leg of horse racing’s triple crown, the Belmont will kick off the series this year due to the coronavirus pandemic. The Belmont will be contested at 1 1/8 miles and one turn at Belmont Park, down from the normal 1 1/2 miles and two turns.
The Kentucky Derby was postponed from May 2 to Sept. 5 in Louisville, Ky. The Preakness Stakes in Baltimore was pushed back from May 16 to Oct. 3.
Tiz the Law, who won the Florida Derby, became the betting favorite after Nadal (broken leg), Charlatan (ankle injury) and Maxfield (leg fracture) withdrew.
Trainer Barclay Tagg, who saddles Tiz the Law, said of the draw, “Well, it could have been worse. I was hoping to get five to seven, something like that. So we’ll take eight.”
The second favorite is Sole Volante, who has 9-2 odds after landing the No. 2 starting spot.
