Five-time All-Star Tulowitzki retires

Five-time All-Star Troy Tulowitzki announced his retirement on Thursday after injuries again derailed another season.

Tulowitzki, 34, was able to play in just five games for the New York Yankees due to a calf injury. He went 2 for 11 with a homer and last played on April 3.

Tulowitzki also missed all of last season and the final two-plus months of the 2017 season with a heel injury while with the Toronto Blue Jays.

“For as long as I can remember, my dream was to compete at the highest level as a Major League Baseball Player … to wear a big league uniform and play hard for my teammates and the fans,” Tulowitzki said in a statement issued through the Yankees. “I will forever be grateful for every day that I’ve had to live out my dream. It has been an absolute honor.

“I will always look back with tremendous gratitude for having the privilege of playing as long as I did. There is no way to truly express my gratitude to the fans of Colorado, Toronto and New York. They always made my family and I feel so welcome.

“I want to thank the Yankees organization and (general manager) Brian Cashman for giving me the opportunity to wear the Yankees uniform and live out another childhood dream. I wish that my health had allowed for a different ending to that chapter.”

Tulowitzki finishes his career as a .290 hitter with 225 homers and 780 RBIs in 1,291 games.

Tulowitzki was selected seventh overall by the Rockies in the 2005 draft out of Long Beach State and was runner-up for NL Rookie of the Year honors in 2007 when he batted .291 with 24 homers and 99 RBIs.

He finished fifth in the National League MVP voting for both the 2009 and 2010 seasons. Tulowitzki won Gold Glove awards in 2010 and 2011.

The Rockies dealt Tulowitzki to the Blue Jays prior to the trading deadline in July 2015 for four players, including Jose Reyes.

His best season with Toronto was in 2016 when he batted .254 with 24 homers and 79 RBIs.

After injury issues picked up, the Blue Jays released Tulowitzki last December and he eventually caught on with New York.

But after being placed on the injured list in early April, Tulowitzki was unable to fully mend the calf. He had a setback and was later transferred to the 60-day IL and never made it back to the majors before Thursday’s announcement.

Tulowitzki indicated in his retirement statement that he would like to remain involved in baseball.

“While this chapter is now over, I look forward to continuing my involvement in the game that I love … instructing and helping young players to achieve their goals and dreams,” Tulowitzki said.

“I’m saying goodbye to Major League Baseball, but I will never say goodbye 2 the game I love. Thanks again 2 all of you!”
