Two staples of the competitive esports scene have been recognized by Time magazine on its list of the best video games of the past decade.
Riot Games’ League of Legends and Epic Games’ Fortnite were named on the list as the calendar winds down on the 2010s.
League of Legends, which launched in 2009, has become a behemoth on the competitive gaming scene, with competitions regularly filling massive venues and offering millions in prize money.
The game also has spawned leagues around the world and even has led some universities to offer scholarships for players. Fortnite hit the scene in 2017 and has emerged as a phenomenon for both competitive players and content creators alike. The first year of competitive play ended with the Fortnite World Cup in August, which boasted a $30 million prize pool.
The game also made a star of American streamer Ninja, a former Halo 3 player who built an audience of more than 14 million primarily streaming Fortnite on Twitch.
The other games making the list were Grand Theft Auto V, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Dark Souls, Pokemon Go, Minecraft, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Portal 2 and Disco Elysium.
