Georgia quarterback Jake Fromm announced Wednesday he will give up his senior season in favor of the 2020 NFL Draft.

ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. listed Fromm as the No. 5 quarterback in the nation in his most recent draft rankings.

Fromm, a native of Warner Robins, Ga., announced his decision on social media.

“This process and decision has been unbelievably difficult but through much prayer and counsel, I have decided that it is time for me to take on the next challenge in my life and pursue my lifelong dream of playing in the NFL,” he wrote.

The 6-foot-2, 220-pound Fromm entered Georgia as a five-star prospect in 2017 and was set to back up sophomore Jacob Eason. But when Eason was injured in the opener, Fromm took over and never relinquished the starting job, leading the Bulldogs to the College Football Playoff championship game — a 26-23 loss to Alabama.

Eason, another five-star recruit, transferred to Washington after the 2017 season and two weeks ago announced he will enter the 2020 draft.



Fromm entered the 2018 season with a challenge from another Georgia-raised five-star quarterback, Justin Fields, but retained the starting spot. Fields transferred to Ohio State.

In his Georgia career, Fromm appeared in 43 games — 42 of them as the starter — and posted a 35-7 career record. His 8,224 passing yards put him fourth in school history, and his 78 career touchdown passes rank second all-time for the Bulldogs. He has a career completion percentage of 63.2 percent (621 of 982).

Despite three consecutive recruiting classes (2016-18) with five-star quarterbacks, Georgia will enter the 2020 season unsettled at the position and could look for a graduate transfer to fill the role.

The Bulldogs have three scholarship passers remaining: former walk-on Stetson Bennett, who appeared in five games in 2019; redshirt freshman D’Wan Mathis, who will go through spring drills after emergency brain surgery last May; and Carson Beck, a four-star freshman from Florida ranked as the No. 8 pro-style QB in the nation by the 247Sports composite.
