NCAA hands Georgia Tech one-year postseason ban

The Georgia Tech men’s basketball program was handed a one-year postseason ban Thursday, and also was placed on probation for four years, after an NCAA investigation uncovered recruiting violations made by an assistant coach and a booster with ties to head coach Josh Pastner.

Other penalties handed down Thursday include the reduction of four scholarships — one for each year on probation — along with recruiting restrictions and a fine of $5,000 plus two percent of the program’s budget, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The Yellow Jackets have not been to the NCAA Tournament since 2010, but they did participate in the NIT in 2017, Pastner’s first season. Georgia Tech is 48-53 in three seasons under Pastner.

The NCAA’s findings determined that Ron Bell, who had ties to Pastner and was identified as “representative of the institution’s athletic interests,” was determined to have provided more than $2,000 in benefits to players on 2016 and 2017.

In addition, former assistant coach Darryl LaBarrie was determined to have given a recruit $300 for a visit to an Atlanta strip club and then providing the NCAA with false and/or misleading statements when it came to the offense.

LaBarrie, who was determined to have committed two recruiting violations, was given a three-year show-cause order, meaning he is not allowed to coach at the college level for three years, “unless (the school hiring him) shows cause why the restrictions should not apply.”

“Both sets of violations occurred because men’s basketball coaching staff members invited outside individuals into their program,” the NCAA committee on infractions said in a statement. “They permitted these outside individuals to interact with their student-athletes, and those actions resulted in violations.”
