Golf Glance: Wise defends, Champions' McCarron on a roll

Field Level Media’s Golf Glance provides weekly news and storylines from each of the major North American golf tours.

PGA TOUR

LAST TOURNAMENT: Wells Fargo Championship (Max Homa)

Brooks Koepka
John David Mercer-USA TODAY Sports

THIS WEEK: AT&T Byron Nelson, May 9-12
Trinity Forest Golf Club, Dallas, Texas (Par 71, 7,380 yards)
Purse: $7.9 million (Winner: $1.422 million)
Defending champion: Aaron Wise
FedEx Cup leader: Matt Kuchar
Television: Thursday, 3:30-6:30 p.m. ET (Golf Channel); Friday, 3-6:30 p.m. ET (Golf Channel); Saturday-Sunday, 1-2:45 (Golf Channel), 3-6 p.m. (CBS).
Three-time major champion Brooks Koepka (No. 3) is the top-ranked player in the field. No. 19 Patrick Reed is the only other top 20 player. However, 14 of the top 50 are in the field compared to only five during the event’s first playing at Trinity’s links-style layout last year after 35 years at TPC Four Seasons. … Wise earned his first victory in the event last year at just 21 years, 10 months and 29 days old. That was the second youngest in PGA Tour history behind Tiger Woods (21 years, 4 months, 18 days). … Former Dallas Cowboys QB and current CBS Sports analyst Tony Romo is in the field and is a 10,000-to-1 longshot to win by Bovada. This is his third sponsor exemption on the Tour, having played in each of the past two Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championships.
BEST BETS: Koepka (6.5/1) is the class of this field and has admitted his focus is better around the majors. Koepka hasn’t played since a 2T at the Masters as he prepares to defend next week. … Marc Leishman (28/1) was runner-up last year, including setting the course record with a 10-under 61 in the first round. He won the CIMB Classic earlier this year as part of a stretch with four top-fives in six starts. … Kevin Na (40/1) posted a T10 in his last start at the RBC Heritage and was T6 in this event last year, breaking 70 in all four rounds.
NEXT WEEK: PGA Championship, Bethpage Black, Farmingdale, N.Y.

LPGA TOUR

LAST TOURNAMENT: LPGA Mediheal Championship (Sei Young Kim)
THIS WEEK: OFF
NEXT TOURNAMENT: Pure Silk Championship, Williamsburg, Va., May 23-26

CHAMPIONS TOUR

Scott McCarron
Rob Schumacher/The Republic via USA TODAY NETWORK

LAST TOURNAMENT: Insperity Invitational (Scott McCarron)
THIS WEEK: Regions Tradition, May 9-12
Greystone Golf & Country Club, Birmingham, Ala. (Founders Course; Par 72, 7,277 yards)
Purse: $2.4 million, (Winner: $360,000)
Defending Champion: Miguel Angel Jimenez
Charles Schwab Cup leader: Scott McCarron
Television: Friday-Saturday, 12-3 p.m. ET; Sunday 3-6 p.m. (All times Golf Channel)
This is the first major of the season on the Champions tour. … The 78-player field includes eight previous winners, including two-time event champions Bernhard Langer (2016-17), Fred Funk (2008, ’10) and Tom Lehman (2011-12). … Jimenez claimed his first Champions major title after holding or sharing the lead after every round. … Steve Stricker finished T5 last week and finished runner-up to Jimenez in last year’s Regions along with Joe Durant and Gene Sauers.
BEST BETS: Langer (8/1 by Bovada) is coming off a T15 last week. He knows this course well and his game is rounding into shape after taking some time off earlier in the year to recover from an injury to his midsection. … Meanwhile, McCarron (8/1) is already a multiple winner this year and has been a consistent presence on the front page of leaderboards. … Jimenez (16/1) provides good odds for a defending champion who posted T10s in all five senior majors last year while posting a tour-best 68.40 scoring average.
NEXT TOURNAMENT: Senior PGA Championship, Rochester, N.Y., May 23-26
