Gonzaga latest to get a turn at No. 1

Gonzaga moved into the No. 1 spot in the latest Associated Press Top 25 men’s college basketball poll, becoming the sixth team to occupy the slot.

Last week’s No. 1, Kansas, lost to Villanova and fell to No. 5.

Gonzaga (13-1) gained 54 of 65 first-place votes and was followed by Ohio State (11-1). No. 3 Louisville (11-1) and No. 4 Duke (10-1) held their places from the previous week.

The only loss for Gonzaga came to Michigan in the final of the Battle 4 Atlantis in the Bahamas on Nov. 29.

Kentucky, No. 6 last week, plummeted to No. 19 following losses to Utah and Ohio State. The Wildcats (8-3) will meet Louisville on Saturday in a clash between the state’s two marquee programs.

Oregon (10-2) climbed two spots to No. 6, followed by Baylor (9-1), which moved up three places.

Entering the top 10 were No. 8 Auburn (11-0), followed by Memphis (10-1) and Villanova (9-2), which jumped from No. 18.

Falling out of the top 10 were Maryland, who dropped from No. 7 to No. 13 following a loss to Seton Hall, and Virginia. The Cavaliers tumbled from No. 9 to No. 16 after losing to South Carolina.

Iowa (9-3) joined the poll at No. 25, with Tennessee (8-3) dropping out after a loss to Cincinnati during the week.
