Gregg Marshall resigns at Wichita State

Gregg Marshall

Gregg Marshall resigned as Wichita State men’s basketball coach following an internal investigation into allegations of misconduct toward Shockers players, the school announced Tuesday.

The school agreed to a contract settlement of $7.75 million, with the sum to be paid over six years.

“This was a difficult decision, but one I feel was necessary for my family, the university and, most importantly, the student-athletes,” Marshall, 57, said in a statement.

Players have accused Marshall of abusive behavior, with one alleging the coach punched former player Shaquille Morris during a practice in the 2015-16 season. Marshall also is alleged to have placed his hands around a staff member’s neck during that same season, and he allegedly berated a student-athlete from another sport and attempted to punch him through the driver’s side window of his vehicle because the student had parked in the coach’s spot.

Former players at Winthrop recently have accused Marshall of abusive and racist behavior. Marshall was with that school from 1998-2007.

Shockers exodus last spring

Wichita State saw eight players initially enter the transfer portal last spring, with seven ultimately departing.

“Our student-athletes are our primary concern,” Wichita State director of athletics Darron Boatright said. “While the university acknowledges the success of the basketball program under Coach Marshall, this decision is in the best interest of the university, its student-athletes and the WSU community.”

The winningest coach in Wichita State history, Marshall owns a 331-121 record with the Shockers and 525-204 overall mark. He guided Wichita State to seven NCAA Tournament appearances, including a berth in the Final Four during the 2012-13 season.

Assistant coach Isaac Brown will serve as Wichita State’s interim head coach.
