Brady Hoke will become San Diego State’s head coach for the second time after the resignation of Rocky Long, multiple outlets reported on Wednesday.
Long, who turns 70 later this month, is departing with three seasons remaining on his contract. Multiple reports said he has been searching for a position as a defensive coordinator with a Power Five school, with Syracuse mentioned as a potential landing spot.
San Diego State has called a “major news conference” for 5 p.m. ET involving the football program.
Hoke, 61, went 13-12 in two seasons as coach of the Aztecs in 2009-10 before leaving to take his “dream job” at Michigan. He was 31-20 in four seasons with the Wolverines before being fired after the 2014 season, which the Wolverines finished at 5-7.
Long, who was defensive coordinator under Hoke, was promoted to Aztecs head coach and guided the squad to bowl games in all nine of his seasons. He has an 81-38 record at San Diego State, including four seasons with 10 or more victories.
Only legendary Don Coryell (104-19-2 from 1961-72) has more victories at the school than Long. The Aztecs were 10-3 this season, finishing with a 48-11 rout of Central Michigan in the New Mexico Bowl.
Hoke was defensive line coach at San Diego State this season. After his firing at Michigan, he had assistant stints at Oregon (2016), Tennessee (2017) and the NFL’s Carolina Panthers (2018). He was 0-2 as Tennessee’s interim coach after the school fired Butch Jones.
Overall, Hoke has a 78-72 record. His first gig was at Ball State, where he went 34-38 from 2003-08, including a 12-1 mark in his final season.
Hoke guided Michigan to a victory over Ohio State in 2011 — the Wolverines’ most-recent win over the Buckeyes.
