Indy 500 to run Aug. 23 with 50 percent fan capacity

The 104th Indianapolis 500 will run on Aug. 23 with fan attendance reduced to 50 percent capacity.

With a permanent seating for more than 250,000 plus room for tens of thousands more spectators in the infield, that still represents a massive crowd as the nation continues to grapple with the coronavirus pandemic.

“We’re committed to running the Indy 500 on Sunday, Aug. 23 and will welcome fans to the world’s greatest racing venue,” Indianapolis Motor Speedway president J. Douglas Boles said in a statement Friday. “We will be limiting attendance to approximately 50 percent of venue capacity, and we are also finalizing a number of additional carefully considered health and safety measures. We’ll unveil the specific details of our comprehensive plan in the coming weeks.”

Normally held during the Memorial Day weekend in May, “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing” was pushed from May 24 to August due to COVID-19 concerns.

The release said individuals in high-risk groups are encouraged to consider staying home.
