Australia’s Nick Kyrgios is on the cusp of a 16-week ban and received an additional $25,000 fine from the ATP on Thursday for his “aggravated behavior” last month in Cincinnati.
“The investigation found a pattern of behavior related to Kyrgios’s verbal abuse of officials and/or spectators in the past 12 months that constitutes a violation,” the ATP said in a statement, adding that Kyrgios had five working days to appeal.
The 24-year-old was fined $113,000 for eight separate offenses following his meltdown after a second-round loss at the Western & Southern Open, including smashing two rackets and insulting the chair umpire.
The suspended 16-week ban issued Thursday will only go into effect if he commits similar acts over a six-month probation period.
Kyrgios must also agree to receive continued support from a mental coach during tournaments and consult a behavior management specialist in the offseason.
Ranked No. 29 in the world and seeded sixth, Kyrgios fell in straight sets in the first round Wednesday at the Zhuhai Championships in China.
