Glover Teixeira is 40 years old, but he's showing no signs of slowing down.
The longtime UFC light heavyweight competitor from Brazil served notice to the MMA world that he's still quite a force to be reckoned with a statement victory over fellow former title challenger Anthony Smith of Nebraska in the main event of the UFC fight card Wednesday night in Jacksonville, Fla.
Teixeira (31-7) delivered a ruthless beatdown in a fight that arguably was allowed to go on considerably longer than it should have before the proceedings finally were waved off at the 1:04 mark of the fifth round at VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena.
"It's not how hard you hit, it's how hard you get hit and keep coming forward," Teixeira said following his fourth consecutive victory.
Smith (33-15) started the fight strong, pushing a fast pace and landing kicks to set up distance and then close it with effective combos.
Teixeira weathered the early barrage, however, and by the middle of the second round, he picked up the pace and began landing punishing uppercuts to the head and body. The blows soon took their toll Smith, a former middleweight.
By the third round, Teixeira's shots dropped Smith, and Teixeira followed up the onslaught on the mat. This continued to an almost cringeworthy degree in the fourth round, as Teixeira piled on the damage while Smith covered up and absorbed it.
In an exchange that could be heard on television with fans banned from the arena due to the coronavirus pandemic, Smith told his cornermen after the fourth round, "My teeth are falling out."
However, he was still sent out to take more punishment. The fight was finally stopped after another minute-plus of one-sided action.
Teixeira, who scored a victory via stoppage for the 26th time in his career, has now won five of his past six bouts. Smith, 31, has dropped two out of his past three fights.
