Paula Creamer finally healthy, excited to take on Olympic Club

Paula Creamer will continue her comeback at this week's U.S. Women's Open.

Whether she will be a factor or not remains to be seen, but the Bay Area native is excited the event is being played for the first time at San Francisco's iconic Olympic Club, which has played host to five previous U.S. Opens.

"Venue is everything," Creamer said Wednesday. "I believe that. I mean, you couldn't ask for a better place.

"Obviously, being from the Bay Area, having my name on the trophy here would be just as special, but I think, at the same time, if your name's on the trophy where the U.S. Open's at, you'll take it."

Creamer does have her name on the U.S. Women's Open trophy, having claimed her lone major title to date at Oakmont Country Club in 2010. She only finished outside the top 20 at the event twice between 2004-16, but she arrived at Olympic Club this week riding a streak of three consecutive missed cuts at the U.S. Women's Open.

Creamer also missed the cut at last month's Pure Silk Championship. She failed to make the weekend by five shots. Granted, it was also Creamer's first event in almost a year.

The 34-year-old has been plagued by left hand and wrist injuries for years. So she decided to take advantage of the LPGA Tour's hiatus due to the coronavirus pandemic to get fully healed -- and recharged.

"Going through injuries and all of that, it's tough, and you never know if you're going to be able to play again the same," she said. "It's nice to actually be able to come out and play a golf course and not have to hurry home and ice and do rehab and all of this to my body. I can actually go practice again if I want."

Creamer has only won once since that 2010 triumph. But the last time she made the cut at the U.S. Women's Open was also in California, at CordeValle south of San Jose in 2016.

"I feel the best I've felt in probably six years, quite truthfully, and that's saying a lot," she said.
