The Seattle Mariners activated former Cy Young Award winner Felix Hernandez from the 60-day injured list to start Saturday’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays.
The 33-year-old Hernandez was sidelined 3 1/2 months due to a shoulder strain.
Hernandez struggled prior to the IL stint by going 1-4 with a 6.52 ERA in eight starts. The player nicknamed “King Felix” is in the final season of a seven-year, $175 million contract.
“I can’t wait to go up there and pitch,” Hernandez told MLB.com on Friday. “It’s going to be my last year. I don’t know what’s going to happen next year, so I’m going to go up there and show them that I still love the fans and that I still love Seattle.
“It’s been frustrating. It’s been tough on my mind. But you know what, you got to forget about it. We’ve got a month and a half left, I’m just going to go out there and pitch.”
Hernandez, a six-time All-Star, won the Cy Young Award in 2010. He is the franchise’s all-time leader with 169 victories and is a two-time American League ERA champion.
The Mariners optioned Zac Grotz to Triple-A Tacoma to open up the roster opening. Grotz was 1-0 with a 3.52 ERA in five appearances for Seattle and was 4-4 with a 2.51 ERA in 26 appearances (six starts) at Double-A Arkansas prior to his recall.
