Miguel Cabrera joins 500 HR club

Detroit Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera became the 28th member of the 500-home run club on Sunday.

The 19-year veteran launched a 400-foot solo shot to right field in the sixth inning against Blue Jays left-hander Steven Matz in Toronto.

Cabrera, 38, is the first Venezuelan player to reach the milestone and the first major leaguer to do so since David Ortiz in 2015.

He is the first player in the 121-year history of the franchise to hit No. 500 wearing a Tigers uniform.

It was the 13th home run of the season for the 11-time All-Star and two-time Most Valuable Player.

Cabrera led the American League with 37 home runs in 2008 and led the majors with 44 in 2012, the same year he won the Triple Crown with a .330 batting average and 139 RBIs.

He belted his first career home run — a walk-off homer in his MLB debut — on June 20, 2003 while playing for the then-Florida Marlins against the then-Tampa Bay Devil Rays.
