Dusty Baker returning to manage Astros in 2022

Dusty Baker will return to manage the American League champion Houston Astros next season.

The club announced Friday it has agreed with Baker on a one-year contract to cover the 2022 season. Financial terms were not disclosed.

The Astros made their third World Series appearance in five years in 2021 but lost in six games to the Atlanta Braves.

Baker, 72, has led Houston since 2020, when he was hired in the wake of the Astros’ sign-stealing scandal that cost former manager A.J. Hinch and others their jobs.

Baker is the 12th-winningest manager in Major League Baseball history with 1,987 wins. But he is still seeking his first World Series victory. He has only reached the Fall Classic twice: in 2002 with the San Francisco Giants and 2021.

Next season will be Baker’s 25th as a major league manager after stints with the Giants (1993-2002), Chicago Cubs (2003-06), Cincinnati Reds (2008-13), Washington Nationals (2016-17) and Astros. He is the only manager to win division titles with five different clubs.
