Report: J.D. Martinez opts to remain with Red Sox in 2022

Boston Red Sox slugger J.D. Martinez opted in to the final year of his contract and will earn $19.35 million in 2022, MLB Network reported Sunday.

Martinez earned his fourth All-Star selection in 2021, batting .286 with 28 homers, 99 RBIs and a league-leading 42 doubles in 148 games.

He batted .344 (11 for 32) with three homers and 10 RBIs in nine postseason games for the Red Sox, who fell to the Houston Astros in six games in the American League Championship Series.

The 34-year-old designated hitter and outfielder also had opt-out clauses following the 2019 and 2020 seasons on the five-year, $110 million deal he signed in February 2018. He will enter free agency after the 2022 season.

Martinez is a career .290/.353/.528 hitter with 266 home runs and 837 RBIs in 1,270 games with the Astros (2011-13), Detroit Tigers (2014-17), Arizona Diamondbacks (2017) and Red Sox.

MLB Network also reported that Boston declined its $10 million team option for right-hander Garrett Richards, who will receive a $1.5 million buyout.

Richards, 33, went 7-8 with three saves and a 4.87 ERA in 40 games (22 starts) in his first season with the Red Sox in 2021.
