Cincinnati Reds right-hander Tejay Antone will have season-ending Tommy John surgery.
It is the second such reconstruction surgery for the 27-year-old reliever, who announced his diagnosis on Twitter on Thursday. He also missed the 2017 minor league season after tearing the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow. “I have full trust in Dr. (Timothy) Kremchek and his team to get me back even better this time,” Antone posted. “Life is bigger than one person’s career. My hope through this whole thing is to inspire others.”
Antone was placed on the 10-day injured list on Wednesday. He winced after throwing his fifth and final pitch in Tuesday night’s 7-4 loss at Milwaukee and immediately signaled for a trainer.
He finishes the season 2-0 with three saves a 2.14 ERA in 23 appearances out of the bullpen. He struck out 42 batters and walked 13 in 33 2/3 innings.
Antone made his major league debut in 2020 and went 0-3 with a 2.80 ERA in 13 games (four starts).
