MLB suspends 8 for Reds-Pirates brawl

Major League Baseball handed down eight suspensions Thursday stemming from the bench-clearing brawl between the Pittsburgh Pirates and Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday.

Three players from each team and both managers were disciplined, including undisclosed fines. All six players have appealed the decision, delaying the start of the potential suspension.

“The incidents between these two clubs remain a source of concern, and it’s reflected by the level of discipline we are handing down today,” MLB chief baseball officer Joe Torre said in a statement.

“Everyone on the field should be aware of the example they are setting for fans, particularly young people. I firmly expect these two managers and all others to hold their players accountable for appropriate conduct and to guide them in the right direction.”

–Pirates pitcher Keone Kela received a 10-game suspension for intentionally throwing in the area of the head of Derek Dietrich in the bottom of the seventh inning and for his role in instigating the bench-clearing incident in the top of the ninth.

–Reds pitcher Amir Garrett received an eight-game suspension for inciting the bench-clearing incident by running to the area outside the Pirates’ dugout and throwing a punch in the ninth inning.

–Pirates infielder Jose Osuna received a five-game suspension for aggressive and inappropriate actions during the brawl.

–Reds pitcher Jared Hughes received a three-game suspension for intentionally throwing a pitch at Starling Marte in the top of the ninth.

–Pirates pitcher Kyle Crick received a three-game suspension for inappropriate actions during the ninth-inning incident.

–Cleveland Indians outfielder Yasiel Puig, who was then a member of the Reds, received a three-game suspension for aggressive actions in the ninth inning.

–Reds manager David Bell received a six-game suspension for returning to the field following his ejection; escalating the incident with his aggressive actions; his club’s intentional pitch at Marte; and his numerous ejections this season. His suspension begins Thursday night.

–Pirates manager Clint Hurdle received a two-game suspension for his club’s conduct during the incident and his club’s multiple intentional pitches thrown at Dietrich this season. Hurdle will start serving the suspension Friday.

The tensions started in the seventh inning when both teams were warned after Kela threw a pitch over the head of Dietrich. Then, the Reds’ Hughes was ejected after hitting Marte in the leg with the first pitch of the ninth.

Garrett replaced Hughes and continued to have words with the Pirates bench. Four batters later he charged Pittsburgh’s dugout during a meeting at the mound with coach Jeff Pickler.

Garrett was met by a half dozen Pirates and a long brawl ensued.

Fines were also issued to Pirates pitcher Trevor Williams, Reds first baseman Joey Votto and Reds outfielder Phillip Ervin. Other players received fines for participating in the bench-clearing incident while on the injured list.
