MLB suspends Sam Dyson for 2021 season

Sam Dyson

Free-agent pitcher Sam Dyson has accepted a season-long suspension for 2021, including the postseason, MLB announced Friday.

MLB said Dyson accepted the suspension under the league’s Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Policy. According to a release from MLB, Dyson will participate in a “confidential and comprehensive evaluation and treatment program supervised by the Joint Policy Board.”

MLB opened an investigation into Dyson in November, following published reports of alleged abuse suffered by an ex-girlfriend in November 2019. He has not been charged with a crime.

“My office has completed its investigation,” commissioner Rob Manfred said in a statement. “Having reviewed all of the available evidence, I have concluded that Mr. Dyson violated our Policy and that discipline is appropriate.”

Sam Dyson Recovering From Shoulder Surgery

Dyson didn’t pitch in 2020 while recovering from shoulder surgery. He will be 33 if he attempts to return to the league in 2022.

A fourth-round draft pick by the Toronto Blue Jays in 2010, Dyson has eight years of experience in the majors as a right-handed reliever and has amassed a career 24-23 record with a 3.40 ERA over 376 appearances (1 start). Dyson has played for the Blue Jays, Miami Marlins, Texas Rangers, San Francisco Giants and Minnesota Twins.
