Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Trevor Bauer will not rejoin his team this season as the investigation continues into allegations of sexual assault.
On Friday, Major League Baseball and the players association agreed to extend his paid, administrative leave through the end of the World Series. Bauer last pitched for the Dodgers on June 28, before a San Diego woman said he assaulted her during consensual sex — triggering an investigation by both MLB and police in Pasadena, Calif., where Bauer lives and the alleged assault took place.
On Aug. 27, the Pasadena Police Department turned the case over to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office to determine whether to press charges against the 30-year-old Bauer. He has denied all allegations.
Bauer has been on administrative leave since July 2, and his leave has been extended nine times. Now, with the season drawing to a close in three weeks and the Dodgers all but assured a postseason berth, this move puts to rest any possibility he could return and serve as a distraction as the Dodgers attempt to repeat their World Series championship.
Bauer’s co-agents, Jon Fetterolf and Rachel Luba, issued a statement on Friday afternoon.
“Today, Mr. Bauer agreed to extend his administrative leave through the playoffs in a measure of good faith and in an effort to minimize any distraction to the Dodgers organization and his teammates. He continues to cooperate with the MLB investigation and refute the baseless allegations against him.
“Again, by definition administrative leave is neither a disciplinary action nor does it in any way reflect a finding in the league’s investigation.”
Bauer, the reigning National League Cy Young Award winner, signed a three-year, $102 million contract with the Dodgers in the offseason. Before his leave, he was 8-5 with a 2.59 ERA in 17 starts for Los Angeles.
Even if prosecutors do not press charges, MLB commissioner Rob Manfred could issue an unpaid suspension for Bauer under the collective bargaining agreement.
