Right-hander Luis Severino rejoined the New York Yankees from a stint on the 60-day injured list and plan to use him out of the bullpen.
Manager Aaron Boone said Severino can pitch up to three innings out of the bullpen. He last pitched for the Yankees 707 days ago and returns from a number of ailments. In February 2020, he underwent Tommy John surgery and missed all of last season.
He began throwing late in spring training, but groin and shoulder problems derailed Severino multiple times.
Boone said Severino hit 35 pitches in his most recent rehab outing.
Pitching coach Matt Blake said velocity — Severino touched 96 mph in live batting practice last week — is not an issue.
“We want to get him back in a major league environment and see how it goes and make some adjustments off that,” Blake said.
