Brewers win in 10 innings to add to White Sox’s misery

Willy Adames

Willy Adames delivered a walk-off single in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the host Milwaukee Brewers a 4-3 comeback victory over Chicago on Saturday, handing the White Sox their 10th consecutive defeat.

William Contreras opened the 10th as the automatic runner against Michael Kopech (1-5). Christian Yelich was walked intentionally to open and both runners advanced on a wild pitch. Adames then lined a grounder to the left side that shortstop Zach Remillard knocked down but couldn’t corral, allowing Contreras to score.

Hoby Milner (3-0) tossed a perfect 10th inning for the victory.

After being held to one run through six innings by starter Garrett Crochet, the Brewers broke through courtesy of three walks by the bullpen to tie it 3-3 in the seventh.

Justin Anderson relieved to open the inning and walked Brice Turang and Contreras. Jordan Leasure came on with two outs and walked Yelich to load the bases. Adames followed with a two-run single up the middle.

Chicago, off to the worst 58-game start in franchise history, has lost 14 of its last 15 games and 16 of its last 19.

Brewers rookie left-hander Robert Gasser, who had not allowed a home run in his first four big league starts, was tagged for two in five innings. Gasser allowed three runs on seven hits in a 77-pitch outing.

Gavin Sheets put the White Sox up 3-1 with his fifth homer, a two-run shot with one out in the fourth after a leadoff single by Corey Julks.

Andrew Benintendi opened the third inning with his fourth homer, sending an 0-2 pitch to 397 feet to right-center. Gasser had not allowed a homer over his first 25 innings.

Milwaukee answered in the bottom half when Turang singled to open and Joey Ortiz followed with an RBI double.

Benintendi exited the game in the third with what was announced by the team as left Achilles tendinitis.
